I celebrated my 22nd birthday with a new guitar! I’ve played Epi and Gibson Les Pauls & SG’s exclusively since I was 9 years old, but recently bit the bullet on my first Fender Strat.
Pictured is my new guitar along with my Gibson SG that I’ve had for some time now.
Backstory: The first time I ever consciously wanted to play guitar was at the age of 6 when I saw “School of Rock”. I though Jack Black’s worn cherry SG was the sickest shit ever and it sparked a lifelong obsession. I saw Drake Bell play a cherry red Strat on “Drake and Josh” when I was 7 and was enamored by the iconic and timeless look of the guitar. These two have been my childhood dream guitars growing up and having them is a triumphant feeling.
As for the guitar itself. It’s a brand new Fender Player Strat in Sonic red with 3 single coils. I was 99% set on buying the American Professional, but changed my mind at the very last second because I honestly and surprisingly enjoyed the feel of the Mexican Strat over the American, and the bright shade of red was more satisfying to me compared to the darker shade of the USA.
Upon delivery I immediately had the guitar set up with Ernie Ball Super Slinky’s (9’s) and had the pearl pickguard installed.
As for my first impressions. Initially I was extremely apprehensive about getting a Strat. Although the cherry red Strat had been a dream guitar of mine for over a decade, for most of that time I was very much accustomed to Epi and Gibson Les Pauls and SGs. I preferred the thick and rich sound of a humbucker and never really thought about getting a Fender. I was apprehensive about the neck being too fat for speedy playing, and I was worried that the pickups would sound thin, hollow, and weak, and not work well with high gain or heavy distortion (which I have a unwavering penchant for).
In contrast I found the neck to be supremely comfortable, not fat at all. The satin finish allows for superior smoothness and playability. And the pickups sound amazing. Individual notes in a chord ring out with clarity and crispness and when I turn up the distortion and gain the guitar had a certain aggression and tonal quality that I feel is only possible with a Strat. I am overjoyed with my new guitar. Much like my mother tells me I’m the most handsome man in the world, I find that my red Strat is the most visually appealing guitar that could possible be produced.
I have become smugly complacent with my mediocre guitar playing, and now I can sit on my couch in my boxers noodling the same overused Jimmy Page pentatonic licks with what I consider to be the most iconic and picturesque guitar of all time. And I am extremely pleased with myself and my new purchase. Thanks for taking the time to read my write up :)
